Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Albert Ballin

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Albert Ballin
TF-FIC B757-23N Icelandair 2022
TF-FIW B757-27B Icelandair *2018+19

Hapag Lloyd Cruises luxury tour operator leases TF-FIW for selected tours since late 2018. During the first trip the aircraft was all white with "Albert Ballin" titles however when leased again in August/September and December 2019 the aircraft carried the Hapag Lloyd logo on the tail as well. Albert Ballin was a German shipping magnate, the founder of the Hapag Lloyd and company and he is regarded as the father of modern cruise ship travel.

In fall 2022 TF-FIC was repainted all white and later gained large Albert Ballin and small Hapag Lloyd Cruises titles on the port side as was the case for TF-FIW four years prior.

Þingvellir
TF-ISX B757-3E7 Icelandair 2018-25

A third special theme plane at Icelandair was unveiled in 2018 to celebrate two major occasions for Icelanders. First the Danish–Icelandic Act of Union (signed on December 1, 1918), recognized Iceland as a fully independent and sovereign state. Second Year 2018 marked the first time the country's national football team participated in the World Cup; as a sponsor of the team, Icelandair carried the players and staff to Moscow & other places in Russia for their matches. The inner side of the winglets showed #TeamIceland titles. Note the livery was kept after the aircraft was transferred to FlyKhiva (Uzbekistan).

The aircraft is named Þingvellir after a national park in southwestern Iceland. The park lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is of particular significance to the history of the country as it is the place where the Alþingi (Althing) - the national parliament of Iceland - was established in 930 AD, with sessions taking place on site as late as 1798.

Vatnajökull

Vatnajökull
80 Years of Aviation 1937-2017
TF-FIR B757-256 Icelandair 2017-

Icelandair unveiled a second aircraft fully painted by airbrush artists in May 2017 to celebrate its 80th anniversary. Icelandair traces its roots back to 1937, when Flugfélag Akureyrar was founded in Akureyri. Operations started in 1938 with a single Waco floatplane.

Vatnajökull (water glacier in English) is Iceland's largest ice cap; it covers 8-9% of the country and is up to 1000 meters thick. The glacier is at the center of the national park of the same name, which is famous for its great variety of landscape features as well as volcanic and geothermal activity.

Altogether with Hekla Aurora, Vatnajökull is extensively used by the airline for public relations duties.

Hekla Aurora

Hekla Aurora   ★
#MyStopover
TF-FIU B757-256 Icelandair 2014-

TF-FIU is proudly displaying Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights seen over Icelandic mountains, a phenomenon that can only be seen when getting closer to the poles in Winter. The scheme is part of the airline's #MyStopover campaign aimed at promoting stopover tourism in Iceland for US & Canadian travellers going to Europe via the KEF hub or vice versa. The aircraft was known as Hekla before the special scheme as Icelandair aircraft are named after Icelandic volcanoes, and logically became Hekla Aurora afterwards.

Although it might seem like giant decals of mountain scenery have been applied to the belly of plane, the whole aircraft was actually painted by a team of skilled airbrush artists specially hired for the occasion. Each of the airbrush artists was allocated a portion of the plane and reproduced the pattern commisioned by Icelandair. A unique LED ceiling has also been installed onboard the plane to allow mood lighting in the colors of the aurora borealis.

The aircraft has since been used for different events including a low pass over Hallgrimskirkja church in downtown Reykjavik for the city’s annual Winter Lights Festival. Although there's always uncertainty in the schedule of a particular airframe, you can request to fly onboard Hekla Aurora on the airline's dedicated webpage.
