Gold Variation
B-1343 B787-9 Hainan Airlines  [+] 2017-19

While Hainan Airlines was taking delivery of more and more 787s and launching new routes to the US the airline decided to increase its brand awareness via a partnership with the DreamWorks studios which includes the painting of no less than 6 brand new 787-9s in special Kung Fu Panda liveries. The airline also unveiled a series of service products around the Kung Fu Panda theme. The Kung Fu Panda 3 animation movie (released in early 2016) indeed set a record $150 million box office in mainland China. The third sequel was the first work of the Shanghai-based DreamWorks Dongfeng joint-venture.

Yellow Variation
B-7302 B787-9 Hainan Airlines  [+] 2017-19

This third design is the result of a competition open to the public in the US, in cooperation with the DreamWorks studios. Hannah Foss' design was awarded the top prize based on its originality, creativity, humor, its reflection of Chinese culture, and its wow factor. Hannah Foos is a young designer from Alaska; her design includes popular characters like Po and Tigress, with traditional Chinese "chops" and a painted sunrise.

Note that in the end the livery was amended and simplified quite a lot and hardly ressembles the original proposal of Hannah, who was however awarded tickets and a one-week stay in China. Both sides are different and show the main cast as well as old goat Soothsayer from Kung Fu Panda 2. The livery was released as part of the airline's 24th anniversary celebrations.
