LN-TUD B737-705 SAS 2015-16

Juleflyet «Christmas Plane» is an aid operation run by SAS employees since 1985, with former captain Karsten Midtun at its head. Throughout the year, employees collect items and contributions to help children in orphanages and disadvantaged families in Eastern Europe. The charity has helped children in Poland, Estonia and Latvia but since 2003 it is focusing on Estonia and particularly on the forsaken Kopli district in Tallinn suburbs. Once a year an aircraft flies to Tallinn with the aid and a Christmas party is held. 2015 marked the first time SAS applied special decals for the occasion.

LN-RCY B737-883 SAS 2012

Being the most punctual airline in Norway for three years in a row, SAS held a contest to find the «most punctual person» in Norway. The contest was an online game lasting 14 days during which you had to click on a clock the closest you could to 7 SAS flight's scheduled arrival time per day. The winner, Kristoffer B., had his portrait displayed on the tail in a manner to mock Norwegian’s famous tails. In addition he won 100,000 kroner worth of free tickets with SAS.

Making Travel Easier

Making Travel Easier

LN-RLE MD-82 SAS red 1996-01
LN-RMD MD-82 SAS blue 1996-99

«Making Travel Easier» was the slogan of a marketing campaign launched in September 1995 by the airline for the SAS Domestic in Sweden product. This included shuttle flights on the Swedish trunk routes from Stockholm-Arlanda to Gothenburg and Malmö. Frequency was increased with flights almost every hour, dedicated gates and staff as well as other innovations including ticketless travel with a Travel Pass card, easier telephone bookings and automatic check-in at the 3 airports.

A colourful design was associated with this countrywide campaign and the plan called for no less than 5 MD-80s to be painted with «paper plane» liveries and different background colours. The aircraft were initially specifically assigned on those Swedish routes.

However the advertising agency responsible for the whole project had also introduced a cartoon character for advertisement and it was so close to famous Italian cartoon character «La Linea» (The Line) that the campaign disappeared quickly to avoid a lawsuit. Customer response to these bold designs was also not as positive as expected and occurences of business passengers refusing to board the colourful planes were even recorded. As a result only two planes were ever painted and the yellow, purple and green variations planned at first unfortunately never saw the light of day. It is to be noted though that blue and red were to be the main colours of the 1998 rebranding...

LN-RLR MD-82 SAS 1993-94

Two MD82 were painted in special colours to promote the 1994 Winter Olympic Games which were held in Lillehammer in Central Norway. The Games were the first to be held in a different year from the Summer Olympics, just two years after the 1992 Albertville Games. Lillehammer is one of the smallest towns to have ever hosted the event with only about 25,000 inhabitants; it is not an Alpine ski resort itsself but its large ski jumping hill hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. The event logo was composed of stylized aurora borealis (northern lights) and snow crystals. Most of the winter sports were displayed on the fuselage. There were twelve disciplines overall and with 11 gold medals, Russia won the most events, while Norway collected the most medals (26).
