Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada on the border between California & Nevada. It is surrounded by many ski and snow resorts. The port side showed a snowboarder while a skier could be seen on the starboard side.

While the launch of the 'World Images' in 1997 was met with positive reviews from overseas press and customers, perception was much more mixed in the UK; in an attempt to counter the bad press and emphasize the 'Britishness' of the idea, during Winter 97/98 the airline teamed up with the Sunday Times and organized a public competition to find the best British designs. The competition had three sections: children, art student and adult.

This aircraft was unveiled in December 1997 and sported the winning entry in the children section, which theme was 'Britain in a tea cup'. Twelve-years old Simon Baldwin from Middlesborough won with its "British Blend" drawing including an Irish harp, a Scottish thistle, an English rose and a Welsh dragon. The artwork was removed after 6 months and the tail was repainted in the Wings (Denmark) motif.

Carlos Paez Vilaró was an abstract artist from Uruguay. He directed the design and painting of this original artwork for Pluna, the latter taking place in the Varig hangars of Punta Alegre in Brazil. The reason behind this special scheme was the promotion of Punta del Este as a touristic destination, in conjunction with the airport and Hotel Conrad, where Paez Vilaró also designed murals. Financial difficulties at Pluna meant the aircraft was returned to Varig in 2002.

The Philippines as seen by Cebu Pacific. One of 5 special liveries unveiled by Cebu in the late nineties/early 2000s. RP-C1535 was the first aircraft wearing a full special scheme in the Southeast Asia region when it was bought from Air Canada in December 1997. The colourful special scheme celebrated the young airline's effort to make domestic travel in the Philippines more affordable. The airframe was withdrawn from use in 2001 and the livery later re-appeared on sistership RP-C1546 with some very minor changes in the livery.

BA's 1997 livery allowed the airline to easily customize the tail for special events. After having worn a poppy for Remembrance Day, G-BKYG was rolled out in December 1997 with the British Olympic Association lion logo. These three aircraft were encouraging British athletes preparing for the 2000 Sydney Games.

This airframe is of particular significance for the history of the airline. In 1994 on the iniative of a TWA pilot some of the employees raised $233,000/month through payroll deductions for the lease of this GPA owned MD-83 to emphasize their pride of serving with the airline. In 1997 the aircraft got what would be the final TWA scheme with additional markings (as seen here).

In April 2001 the aircraft was registered as N948TW and it was appropriately chosen as the frame which performed the final TWA flight before the merger with American Airlines: on December 1, 2001, Flight 220 linked the two TWA "home cities" of Kansas City & St. Louis on the ceremonial final TWA flight, ending 76 years of service. The aircraft remained in the TWA livery for a few additional months and was only repainted in the standard AA sheme in June 2002. The aircraft is now preserved at the Kansas City TWA museum, and had the original inverted Wings of Pride livery re-applied in 2015.

The Snoopy & The Peanuts gang scheme returned in late 1997 for the ski season, this time with two aircraft as ANA increased service to the Hokkaido gateway of Sapporo. Both sides were different, and again that Winter Snoopy and friends had skis on the port side and snowboards on the starboard side. The -400D was mainly used on the Haneda-Sapporo route while the Classic SR Jumbo was assigned to the Itami-Sapporo route.

The Royal British Legion is a British charity providing financial, social and emotional support to members of the British Armed Forces, veterans and their dependants. The poppy is their logo, as WWI created prime conditions for poppies to flourish in battlefields in Flanders and north-west France. The flower became the symbol of remembrance when Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae wrote the In Flanders Fields poem, which was widely shared in the English-speaking world. The decals were applied in time to commemorate Remembrance Day on November 11th which marked the end of World War I in 1918.

The new livery unveiled in June 1997 allowed BA to easily feature the poppy on the tail of an aircraft.
