The Royal British Legion is a British charity providing financial, social and emotional support to members of the British Armed Forces, veterans and their dependants. The poppy is their logo, as WWI created prime conditions for poppies to flourish in battlefields in Flanders and north-west France. The flower became the symbol of remembrance when Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae wrote the In Flanders Fields poem, which was widely shared in the English-speaking world. The decals were applied in time to commemorate Remembrance Day on November 11th which marked the end of World War I in 1918.

In 2014 the poppy made its reappearance with a small logo near the rear door.

The 2003 "Poppy Appeal" video campaign was recorded in Heathrow with a decal added to BOAF just days after the last flight of the type.

Starting 2000 the decal was added on the fuselage with 3 different 757 sporting the decals for the 2000, 2001 & 2002 commemorations.

The 80th anniversary of the end was commemorated with the unveiling of a poppy tail on G-BVNM, altogether with large "Pause to Remember titles"; the decals were kept for longer than usual, until April 1999. The following Novermber the same scheme was applied to 757 G-BIKW, yet for a much shorter period of time.

The new livery unveiled in June 1997 allowed BA to easily feature the poppy on the tail of an aircraft.

1996 also marked the 75th anniversary of the Royal British Legion which probably triggered this first special livery.
