JAA Japan Asia was the JAL subsidiary in charge of flights to Taiwan (by that time JAL itself could not fly to Taiwan in its name because of diplomatic tensions with the PRC). To celebrate its 20th anniversary, JAA launched a drawing competition among elementary and junior high school students in Taiwan. The winning entry represented an Ami indigenous dance; Naruwan is an Ami greeting meaning "Welcome, for we are all in the same family". The aircraft was unveiled on November 19, 1995.
